    Applications are invited for the position of Head of Modern Languages within the secondary section of a leading British international school. The department currently delivers National Curriculum Key Stage 3, CIE IGCSE and IB Diploma courses in French, German and Spanish. Experience of teaching at least one of these language (preferably German or Spanish) in all Key Stages along with appropriate leadership experience is considered desirable.

    St. Catherine's is a leading independent British international school that teaches 1300 pupils from 3 to 18 years of age. The school is a member of HMC, COBIS and is an IBO world school. It teaches the EYFS curriculum and the National Curriculum for England and Wales, as well as IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

    Job Overview: The Head of Department (HoD) in the Upper School of St Catherine's British School plays a critical role in leading, managing, and developing the department to ensure the delivery of high-quality education. The HoD oversees the academic and administrative functions within the department, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. This position requires strong leadership skills, pedagogical expertise, and a passion for student success.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Instructional Leadership:

  • Provide instructional leadership to departmental staff, supporting their professional growth and effectiveness within the framework of the Upper School professional development review protocol.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages innovative teaching practices and the sharing of best practices among educators.
  • To oversee the successful induction of all new departmental staff so that they are supported and fully aware of expectations, policies, and procedures.
  • To support the Executive Leadership Team and Human Resources Department in the recruitment of new departmental staff. Curriculum Implementation:
  • Ensure that the planning and implementation of the department's curriculum in alignment with national standards, school objectives, and the needs of students.
  • Ensure that teaching materials, resources, and methodologies are current, effective, and engaging, promoting active learning and differentiation.
  • Identify and advocate for resource needs to enhance the department's capacity to meet its objectives effectively.
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for wider departmental learning such as educational visits, cross-curricular projects and external competitions and initiatives. Assessment, Feedback and Data Analysis:
  • Implement Upper School and departmental assessment and feedback strategies to measure student progress, ensuring that assessments are valid, aligned with learning objectives and the grading is standardised against the assessment criteria across all teaching groups.
  • Ensure departmental assessment data is reviewed to inform instructional decisions, identify areas for improvement, and develop targeted interventions to support student achievement. Student Support and Welfare:
  • Collaborate with counsellors, and support staff to monitor the academic progress and well-being of students, implementing interventions as needed to address academic or behavioural challenges. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with other school leaders, such as the Learning Leaders group and the Senior Leadership Team, on school development initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including students, parents, staff, and external partners, to ensure transparency, engagement, and alignment with the school's mission and goals. External Inspection
  • Coordinate the departmental preparation for inspection and evaluation processes, such as ISI inspection and the IB 5-year programme review, ensuring the required documentation and evidence is in place. While the above includes a description of the essential functions of the position, other duties may be assigned by the Deputy Head / Head of Upper School as appropriate.
